Laura Bloomenstein
Laura Bloomenstein is a Professor of Art and runs the ceramics programs at Yavapai College in AZ. She was awarded her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, attended Kansas City Art Institute and then earned her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Laura has exhibited her work across the US and internationally. Laura is currently focusing on Tea bowls since they are an intimate form. She combines her love of the sensuality of porcelain and its ability to retain visual movement, even after it is fired, with visual fragments of her hikes. She begins on the wheel with clay and leaves finger impressions in the forms. She photographs flora and uses the computer to isolate and color the flowers and thistles and all. The images are printed as iron decals or color decals. In addition, she’ll use commercial decals and lusters. Firing several times to add each layer of the fragments, she strives to add depth to the surfaces and guide the viewer around each Tea Bowl.
